BDSM Month: Author Interview with Doris O’Connor (@mamaD8)

We kick off the second week of interviewing an author who puts dominance, submission, and arousal into one – Doris O’Connor. It’s a pleasure to have her interviewed on AfterDark Online.

Doris, welcome, and thank you for coming. To get started, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?

Thanks so much for inviting me over, Ray J

Gah, you know I hate talking about myself, but in a nutshell, I’m Doris, mum, sub, erotic author, and downright loony person, or so I’m told by those who know me well 😉 Hubby/Sir and I have been married for 25 years, and we live in the UK with seven of our brood of nine still living at home with us.

In my writing I like to spin sensual, sassy, and sexy tales involving alpha heroes to die for, and heroines who give as good as they get. From contemporary to paranormal, BDSM to F/F, M/M, and Ménage, haunting love stories are guaranteed, thanks to my very naughty and prolific muse.

How long have you been writing, and what inspired you to begin writing?

I’ve been weaving stories in my head for as long as I can remember, even wrote a few of them down in my teenage years. Then life, marriage, kids came along and it all took a back seat, until a friend entered a writing competition five years ago now.

I thought why not try myself, and I wrote that first chapter in a day and submitted it. Not surprisingly, I didn’t get anywhere, lol.

Still, I got bitten by the writing bug and once I sat down and allowed all those story ideas in my head and characters free reign…. I haven’t looked back since.

I’ll have been published four years in November, and I’ve just submitted my 55th book to my publishers.

What differentiates your work from everyone else’s when you write your stories? What is it that you want your readers to see, and what you don’t want to be as a writer of BDSM?

I think you would have to ask my readers that question to be fair. A recent review I had said that I seem to be constantly re-inventing myself as an author, and to a large extent that is true.

Not that it’s necessarily a conscious decision on my part. I have a very unpredictable and downright filthy muse, and as I’m completely character driven, writing is always an adventure. I very rarely know what’s going to happen next in my books, and I reckon that’s what keeps my writing fresh.

It’s why I write across several genres. My muse would shrivel up and die, if she had to stick to just one genre, though at a push, she’d probably choose shifters. I do like men who growl a lot 😉

One thing’s for sure, you’ll always find at least elements of BDSM in my book. As I mentioned earlier hubby is also my Dom, and I’m his collared submissive, and while we’re not 24/7 (small kids tend to put the spanner in the works) the Dom/sub element is always there in one form or another J

So readers can expect realism in my BDSM stories. One of my editors always makes me smile when she gets one of my stories.

“I always know I get a real BDSM story from you.”

On the same hand I firmly believe in your kink is not my kink, so certain things you’ll never find in my stories. Humiliation is one, and my stories tend to be on the light side. I do like to write about sadists, after all I’m married to one, but I tend to concentrate on the emotional aspects more than the mechanics.

Which of the books did you find the most fun to write, and those that were the most challenging?

The most fun kind are where I wake up one morning with a story idea, and I sit down and write, and write, and write….. They’re the ones that take over and I write a story in several days. I joke that those kinds of stories tend to write themselves.

The most challenging, funnily enough are where I know what’s going to happen. I have to force myself to sit down and write them. Somehow, having a story plotted takes the fun out of it for me, but eventually I’ll reach a point, where the characters finally take charge and then we’re off. Even the rare plotted story doesn’t go as planned—ever.

I find reader expectations quite challenging too. When I know readers are eagerly waiting for the next one in a much loved series….yeah I find that tough.  Not least, because I can only write when my muse talks to me, but also, because I don’t want to disappoint them. It means I overthink things, and then the words stall.

I really just need to let my characters do what they will, and then it all works.

Tell us about your current release Her Panther Protector. How long did it take for you to write, and do you have any trivial pieces you wish to share in writing the story?

Her Panther Protector released August 4th and it’s book 5 in The Protector series, which is a paranormal BDSM series set in Cumbria in the UK.

Sasha’s story was a long time coming. He announced his presence in book two of that series. Well they all did which was most unusual for me, so I knew there would be five books in this series.

However, true to form another character has made himself known since then, and Master Saber’s story is next and the series will shift to London.

Protectors are everywhere, see J

As for how long it took me? Well, at one point I called it the never ending story, lol. It took about a month to write, which isn’t that long, but the word count just kept on growing. At 63,546  K it’s the longest story by far in the series.

Here is the blurb for Her Panther Protector:

[Siren Classic: Erotic Paranormal Consensual BDSM Romance, shape-shifters, bondage, spanking, flogging, sex toys, HEA]

A son and a mate in one fell swoop—he’ll never live this down.

Panther shifter Sasha Draven might be a Protector, but that doesn’t mean he’s is in a hurry to get his ass kicked protecting clueless humans. This bad boy doesn’t do commitment, but when he comes face to face with his past in the form of his son, every protective instinct he never knew he had kicks in. He will protect what’s his at all costs.

Macey Laine thought she’d escaped the inner city violence threatening her nephew when she left Glasgow behind. The last thing she expects is to come face to face with her sister’s past in her own home. There’s no denying this bad boy biker is Kenny’s father. If only she could deny the instant connection she feels to this stranger, as easily.

Nothing good will come of this, especially when the threat to Kenny tracks them down…

What other projects are you working on, and what do you expect readers to hear about you in the near future?

Hmm, let me see:

-The Alpha’s Assassin (M/M) is part of the Bad Alpha Man Love Anthology and releases August 21st

Blurb:

Love is for fools…

Bear shifter Zayden Reid makes his living doing what he does best—killing people. The sought after assassin doesn’t have to think twice when he’s offered a lot of money to kill the Alpha of a wolf pack, until he scents his mate.

As the Alpha of his pack Quinton Thorn is used to giving orders. He may be gay, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak, and he’ll squash any challenge to his leadership with ruthless efficiency. When the threat comes from a source he trusts, however, can he afford to give into his feelings for his mate, knowing that he’ll endanger everyone under his protection?

The mating bond cannot be denied, no matter what the consequences, and they might well kill.

-A Mutt in Disguise (M/F) is scheduled for an August release

Blurb:

Love knows no boundaries—or does it?

When Anja is abandoned by her nightmare of a so-called boyfriend, she relies on Mutt to escort her safely home from the homeless shelter she volunteers at. Her canine friend proves to be an excellent listener. If only she could keep the wolf like dog, but confining him to be a mere pet would be downright cruel.

When she wakes up on her own, after a night full of erotic dreams, Anja doubts her sanity. Dogs don’t change into sexy hunks…

Ethan knows he should keep his distance, especially after the night they shared. Humans can’t be trusted, but Anja smashes through all of his emotional defenses, and his wolf scents his mate.

However, Ethan is in disguise for a reason, and he needs to see this through. Will Anja accept the man he truly is, as easily as she did Mutt?

-Claimed by her Bears (M/F/M F/F) is scheduled for release in August

Blurb:

Take one very human girl. Add three bear shifters and one BDSM club. Shake well…

When Goldie Lockwood tumbles into the arms of the new CEO, she falls head over heels in lust with the enigmatic Dom. Interested in the lifestyle she might be, but Jason Stanhope seems way out of her league.

Jason’s bear wants nothing more than to bend Goldie over his desk and claim her right there, but that wouldn’t be appropriate.  This bear shifter comes as a package deal—three for the prize of one. As the oldest of triplets, his mate will also have to submit to his brother and sister.

While Goldie responds beautifully to his training, will a weekend at the club be one step too far, or can she be the sweet sub the siblings need?

Revealing their bears might very well make Goldilocks live up to her name.

-Sunshine and Love (M/M) is scheduled for release in September

Blurb:

He needs a nanny not a submissive…

Aaron Gibson is struggling with his many hats—single dad, business owner, Dom. His desperate search for a suitable nanny for his daughter Sunshine grinds to a halt when Jordan Carole walks into his office.

This inked biker is certainly not your ordinary kind of nanny, but the man’s instant rapport with his daughter convinces Aaron that Jordan is perfect for the job. All Aaron has to do is keep his hands off his nanny—simple, right?

Well, it would be if the two men could ignore the combustible, sexual tension between them. Jordan wants nothing more than to be allowed to take care of his new boss and his adorable baby.

If only he could convince the stubborn man that Sunshine and Love is all they need.

– I have just submitted the start of a new series, called Premiere Companions, which is based on the adventures of the escorts and the clients of this elite escort agency based in London.

The first story is called The Job

Blurb:

Accepting money for sex is wrong—isn’t it?

Alexandra Farrington certainly thinks so. The job she’s agreed to do for her friend is not supposed to involve any sex. However, no man spends this much money on a swish hotel suite and sinful lingerie, and not expect the horizontal shimmy in return.

And what sort of man employs escorts anyhow?

Nathanial Longton cannot believe his eyes when the door opens to reveal his companion for the evening. He has never forgotten the housekeeper’s daughter. The girl he grew up with has grown into a beautiful, sexy woman, and what’s more she’s all his for the night.

Alex and he have unfinished business and, with her at his mercy, it’s payback time.

If only this was just about sex, but Alexandra’s submission awakens much more than his inner Sadist….

Love is far harder to ignore.

As for what else is planned after that? Well, I have more stories to write in Club Spectrum, The Warriors, The Protectors, and The Projects, and lord only knows what else my muse will throw at me J

What advice could you give to other readers that want to get into writing?

If you feel you have a story to tell, then sit down and write it. It’s as simple and as hard as that. Read lots and lots in your chosen genre, but above all—write.

That first draft may well suck monkey balls. Mine did, I tell you, but the more you write the better you get at it. Listen to your characters, find a beta reader that you can trust to give you honest feedback, and when you’ve done the best you can with that story, submit it to publishers.

Do your research with publishers. There are good ones out there, and a heck of a lot of not so good and downright naff ones. Check them out on places like Absolute Write their forums are a source of great info.

You will get rejections. Take them on the chin. They are not personal, although it will feel like that. Listen and act on any feedback you might be given and keep right on going.

I lost count on how many rejections I received before I got my first acceptance.

KEEP WRITING.

There is no magic formula for success, other than to keep writing. If you keep on putting consistently good stories out there, the readers will find you. And above all, enjoy the process. You’re either a writer or you’re not. A true writer will always be writing. It’s in your blood and that passion will show in your work J
