Author Interview with Al Daltrey – BDSM Month

AfterDark Online is happy kick off BDSM Month with Author Al Daltrey. He is best known for his latest books – A Condo With Two Views and Testing The Submissive. We are happy to have him on for an interview.

Al, welcome, and thank you for coming. To get started, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m happily married, live in Canada, and work in the marketing industry.  It was never an intention of mine to write a book.  I fell into it almost by accident.  My wife and I like to travel, and have two beautiful kids.  We like good food, and even better wine.

How long have you been writing, and what inspired you to begin writing?

I’ve only been writing for a year. It was my interest in BDSM that got me started. When I was single, I used to enjoy asking submissives about their past sexual history, and seeing the women squirm or blush when answering. I found it quite erotic. One day, I flipped open my laptop and began writing a kinky story where a sub gets ‘interviewed’ after a session with a dominant. Soon I had 20 pages, then 40, and I knew I was on my way to my first novel. ‘Testing the Submissive’ was born. So, it was my love of BDSM that triggered everything, not my love of writing.

What differentiates your work from everyone else’s when you write your stories? What is it that you want your readers to see, and what you don’t want to be as a writer of BDSM?

I think my work has far more sex in it than the average novel, including erotica novels. I’m also realizing that as I answer this question, I risk sounding pretentious. Authors should be more than storytellers; they should be masters of the craft of writing. In terms of what I ‘don’t want’….I don’t want to be cliché, predictable, or unoriginal.

Which of the books did you find the most fun to write, and those that were the most challenging?

So far I’ve only written two novels myself, and then collaborated on a book.  My current work-in-progress is the most difficult by far. I’m trying to create something even better than what I did before.  I’m trying to weave three stories into one.

Tell us about your current release, River Walk. How long did it take for you to write, and do you have any trivial pieces you wish to share in writing the story?

 River Walk Cover

My current release is a collaboration involving ten female writers – ‘River Walk’.  I wrote ten story outlines, and then found female writers to help bring the stories to life.  I’m very proud of it.  I would say it took us four months to pull the whole thing together.

What other projects are you working on, and what do you expect readers to hear about you in the near future?

My current novel will the first in a three-book series. I owe it to all the people who support me to write something they will feel proud to promote.

What advice could you give to other readers that want to get into writing?

Study the craft of writing. Musicians don’t form a band, until they learn how to play an instrument first. You can’t play hockey, unless you learn to skate first. I think there is too much reliance on Editors.  If you want to write, don’t be lazy. Craft every sentence. Understand grammar yourself. Proofread your own work first. Then, get outside help.

Where can readers purchase your books?

Amazon is the best place. Recently I joined Kindle Unlimited.

Al, thank you so much coming on here. We hope to see have you on here again. Before we go, where can readers look you up (i.e. websites, blog, or social networks)?

And of course, I’m easily found on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and Goodreads.
